View Full Version : Advice Wanted - Restoring a Metro?

As some already know, I have come accross an advert for a rather interesting MG Metro!

Its a 1983 registered 'Tickford' MG Metro Turbo...

The Tickford Metro's for those who do not know, are a rare breed of 26 MG Metro's which had their engines fettled with by a company called Frazier, and their bodies altered by Aston Martin's Tickford coashwork builders. Most of you are probably more aware of its well acclaimed big brother, the limited edition of 505 MG Maestro Turbos.

The result was a chunkier looking Metro (especially for the early 1980s!) which came very well equiped with a Vanden-Plas level of comfort and electricery, but also had a new dashboard and a bodykit, alongside some peperpot alloys.

The finshed example was a car that looked like this (courtesy of austin-rover.co.uk)

The advert I have seen, claims that these cars are worth nigh on £10,000 when complete and in top condition, this one however is not, so is advertised at a mere £500.

As you can see from the below pic (higher res in gallery) this one has had some work done to it before and requires a bit of a 'restoration' job.

http://gallery.brit-cars.com/data//531/medium/tickford-resto4.jpg

Obvious points to note are the new paintwork (only came in silver, green and 'bronze') which needs re-doing, the missing Aston Martin badge from the front wing and the lack of the car's pepperpot alloys!

However, it is described as dent and rust free, save for a small patch on the rear valance (no picture supplied).

The front grille is missing and the bumper is cracked and in need of repair (and painting, like the rest of the car!), the fog lights are also missing.

There are no engine pics either, but it does show the interior as needing carpets and a damn good clean as it has obviously ben exposed to the elements! But the original electrics appear to all be present and whilst not the leather interior, it does appear genuine!

My lack of space issue asides... I just wondered what the verdict was from our panel of experts?

Most people will probably think *its a metro, dont bother* or *yuck, not looking like that* - so I guess I'm after the thoughts of those who have been a little more in-detail to Metro workings or general car resto (JLD?, MartinW?, Sumo?)

It could be an interesting project and pretty cheap in comparisson, but some parts will be impossible to re-purchase and it will require some elbow grease.

I was also wondering if there was a way to tell if it was an original tickford car and not just tickford bits put on a regular Metro? Did they come with am issue number or a certificate or something?

I look forward to your thoughts!

I saw a Tickford Metro at MG'M' 2001, first and only time I had/have ever seen one. Martin Woods might know more about them as he got the 'Tickford' club to attend MG'M' 2001, I think the Metro came some Tickford Capris.

The other person to speak to would be Roger Parker!!

Kelvin - it is actually to your credit that I had so much info about the Tickford Metro. The pictures linked above have been part of the inspiration towards wanting one!

I have also found a few more pics and some info on the Tickford Owners Club (http://www.btinternet.com/~aff/TickfordOwnersClub/) website, which has also been most useful.

A 'blog' on austin-rover.co.uk suggests that a member has seen one go through auction for £5,000-£6,000.

Its a temping proposition, because I wouldnt be doing it for the financial return, but I've always had a Metro soft-spot and the chance to own a limited edition (26 made!) such as this sounds too good to be true.

However, there is no point buying it if the car is ready to be junked, or beyond my means to repair it.

Is there an easy way to contact either of the two mentioned personalities? I doubt either would be trawling these parts to see this for themselves :)

If you want to chase the pesonalites, drop me a PM, but a search on Google will reveal Martin Wood's homepage and his contact details, and Roger parker is contactable thru the MGOC, though I can give you a specific email for him if required!

Thanks for the info Kelvin :drink2:

It needs careful thought, but quickly as well... 24hours remaining to buy before the current offer of £500 is accepted!

Not sure how much it is worth spending on - if at all. I might have to let this one slide :(

I've had an email update from the owner, too.

All 4 pepperpot alloys are missing, but the grille is available. One of the Aston Martin badges is missing, the other is still present.

Rob,

Be very careful mate. Without patronising you in any way, these "projects" can have a nasty habit of becoming a total money pit, unless you know exactly what you are doing.

HTH.

620Turbo, I've done the 'Metro' and 'MGB' experiances before, so I'd like to think I've got a reasonable idea about what needs doing and what to look out for, even if I am unable to do some of the work myself. But I am by no means an expert, and certainly have fond (?) memories of some of the extra expence caused by the MGB!

But regardless, someone else got a bargain motor... £620 after 8 bids.

I'll be kicking myself over this one for years :(

Thanks for the help and advice to all :drink2:

I would just like to take the oppertunity to thank the Tickford owners club for their help with regards to this car :drink2:

However, it has only made me kick myself because I really wish I had bought the car now

This Metro is believed to be one of only 14 ever produced Fraser-Tickford Metro's to be based on an MG Metro Turbo! The same car is also believed to be the very first MG Turbo to be converted...

We understand that 26 full leather Frazers were produced, based on a modified 1.3S Metro, followed by 14 MG Turbos with leather dash and standard MG seats. plus a possible 50 based on a standard MG.

Around 7 Frazers are known to survive, 3 Turbos, but no Standard MG versions seem to have survived at all.

This same gentleman is also one of this cars previous owners also happens the be the Tickford owners club chairman, who currently owns the black example highlighted above by Kelvin at the 2001 MGOC meet :)

Overall, I am now very much kicking myself about not having been able to get the car - if only I had somewhere to put it :(

Once again, a big thanks to Shaun for all his help :drink2:

Someone at work has suggested that I contact the winning bidder and offer to buy it from him for £700, but its probably unlikely to happen.

With a bit of luck, the current owner might not know what they have, get fedup with it once they realise it will never be worth the quoted £10,000 and stick it back on ebay! :D

Further news from the Tickford OC, who have received contact from the new owner!

Apparantly the man who has bought the car requires only the bodykit for his car as his own Tickford is currently without one :(

I think this will be the end of a very deserved car for restoration...
