Is that the car you are looking at, N reg? And is it the more powerful 16V 214? The mileage is below average I'd say, but has the silver been done aftermarket on the trim, and has it been ragged by a boy racer? My wife's 1998 214Si 16V with remote central locking, elec sunroof and front windows and plastic wheel trims (amazingly original!), and no ABS or has only 50k miles in the very popular Nightfire red, and I'd expect to get £500-800 in a private sale. After 8 yrs the car owes us very little, to be honest, although we did buy at a time when prices were high - £11k! It still gets through the MOT, although now starting to just scrape through on suspension, but normally it's only tyres and wipers that need any attention apart from the service. Cambelts are 5yrs/60k miles, so I'd expect you'd be looking at a second cambelt change about now. Also, the radiator needs attention on these as any car, I changed my wife's rad earlier this year as the fins were looking a bit iffy.
They are a good buy, though, and certainly that is evident from the hundreds still on the road compared to the likes of Fords et al. At its launch it was light years ahead of the equivalent products from the competition, and you can see why BMW targetted teh pricing against the bigger comeptition from the Astra and Escort rather than the Corsa and Fiesta.

I'd say its in the right price range, so long as you are happy with the car.

People at work have recently picked up a 214i 8v (N) for £700 and a 214Si 16v (T) for £900.

Assuming its in good condition and you're happy with the age and extras etc... then I dont see why not?

As Martin says, its all down to the spec level, the 214i comes with no frills, the Si comes with the 16v and a host of electrics, a/c and even rear disk brakes!

Do you know much about which model it is, or what spec it has?

the ad just says 214 and so does the rear badge.having second thoughts now, its parked on the road side but in the autotrader it says its a trade sale.went to look at it today and there where 3 other cars parked up for sale also.not 100% yet if we are getting one.if we do then the mg b will have to go.we need a bigger second car and the b just isnt big enough.with the new laws on kids in cars as well, ben my youngest is 5cm under the hight limit so will need a booster seat and that will make him too tall to sit in the back of the b.

I was brought up in the back on an MGB, I look back now and wonder how many interior light covers did I break?

Zamo, what about a 220 coupe or an earlier 200 3-door? Or even a classic saloon with V8?

Zamo : The thing to remember with the MK3 Rover 200's is that there are so many about, you can take your time to pick the colours, engines and specs that you want. You can afford to be choosy and get a good one!

martin would love to.cath uses the zs every day and says she has never got use to it.at first it was the colour, then the turning circle now its the insurence cost.so she asked me to get her a "little run-about" and she has always liked the r200.so this means i get my zs back.so her car needs to be smaller then the zs and a smaller engine.if i had the room i would keep the b as a summer car,get a r200 for cath and the zs for me.you never know if the 6 numbers come up on saturday, then i will be looking for 3 different cars on monday.

Like a Rover P6 3500? :D

Zamo, re your problem with the new regs... can you take out the rear bench seat and then put in the booster?

The rear seats are much higher in a B than the fronts anyway so the child is sitting higher than he needs to be anyway!

after reading a post by pam i think, the regs are stupid anyway.you only need to use the items if you have them.as with the b the rear seat dosnt come with belts so you dont need to use them?i have fitted a 4 point harness so Ben uses this.when i first got the car, i looked into buying a cart seat and removing the bench.the other option is getting a child seat one for up to 11yr old and fitting that instead of the bench seat.i could get a morris minor and fit a v8.
