ALCHEMY PARTNERS, the equity group which was once in the running to buy MG Rover from BMW, is now in the frame to buy Aston Martin.

It is one of a number of equity group cited by The Sunday Telegraph to be lining-up bids of up to £500m for the luxury British carmaker.

Ford put the car-maker up for sale earlier this year.

UK Permira, Texas Pacific Group, the US buyout firm and Jacques Nasser, the former chief executive of Ford and now a partner at One Equity, the private equity arm of JP Morgan are also said to be in the running.

No says BMW

BMW's chief executive, Norbert Reithofer, dismissed suggestions that his company might consider buying Aston Martin.

During a conference call last week to discuss BMW's third-quarter figures, he said: "We are a focused company and we want to stay a focused company. We're not interested," he said.

BMW posted a less than 1% dip in third-quarter net profit.
