A mate of mine (The Jensk - some of you will know him) has a 1981 Mini HL Estate in this colour.

He needs to know what the colour is called, as he needs to get some paint to do the new rear doors. We think it's Mace, but haven't found any piccies to confirm or disprove this.

Can anyone supply a picture of a car in Mace, or alternatively offer any suggestions as to what else the colour could be?

Looks like rusty brown to me ;)

It looks almost Bracken or Sandglow.
Is there a colour code stamped on the body plate, this will help identify it!

Try this page for a few colour guides on MGs.

This page has a limited number of photos but does give the code for Mace although no photo:

I'm sure that there was a brand of tights from the 70's in that colour - American Tan? ;0)

What's the colour code printed on the VIN plates?

What's the colour code printed on the VIN plates?

Allegedly the paint and trim parts of the vin plate were left blank. We've already tried that.

A little off topic I know... but I know someone who used to have one of those in that colour!

Sadly, they dont have a clue about the colour name or paint code :(

It's Russet Brown

It might be the reproduction of the digital photo but I thought Russet Brown was a deeper or muddier brown than that - or at least the the MGBs I have seen in that colour are. It's possible, though.

Take it along to the likes of Brown Brothers or any automotive paint suppliers as they have swatches they can match against the panel colour. They'll usually have the old BL codes and swatches. If you can't move the car, take a door or any piece in the colour small enough. Also, if you are going for a full respray then make sure it is a polished or unfaded piece. Usually the inside of a fuel filler cap works but the Mini did not have such luxuries.

I had my doubts, but judging by the year and type of Mini it should be russet brown.

I had a 1979 1275GT for nearly ten years that spent 5 of those years in russet brown. It was then restored in leyland white.

I have my suspicions that it may be very badly faded Mace brown:

Russet is a deep s****y colour, far to light to be russet.

Thats what I thought it may be but they didn't do the clubman in that colour as the clubman stopped production as this colour was introduced.

The estate continued for a couple of years after the saloon had been dropped. I have a brochure from 1982 that still lists the Estate. However, the car was no longer called Clubman. It was called Mini HL Estate, as I stated in my first post on this thread.

I suppose one could also ask if it is still a factory colour and whether someone has re-painted it during its life in a 'similar' colour?

That could explain some of the shade confusion?
